  • Painter, decorator, typographer and writer, Vilmos Huszar studied at the Budapest Academy of Applied Arts between 1901 and 1903 and, later, at the Munich Academy (1904). His interest in the work of van Gogh and the Modernist developments in Paris and London rapidly led him to abandon his initial brightly coloured landscapes and portraits. In 1915-16, he produced his first abstract works and designs, in painting and stained glass, influenced by Cubism and Futurism. In 1917, he co-founded De Stijl and produced his first abstract compositions. In 1921, he was part of the Constructivism Conference in Dusseldorf, where he met El Lissitzky. After 1930, his painting was particularly inspired by the work of Bart van der Leck and, after the Second World War, on moving to The Netherlands, he began painting naturalist landscapes of the countryside around Harderwijk, the town he settled in.
